We believe the most important piece of our spiritual journey is our relationship with God and others. Without this piece in place first, the rest of our journey will be empty of meaning and purpose. We were created for a personal relationship with God, or as the Bible says, to “know” God. “Now this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” John 17:3
As a follower of Jesus Christ, we need to serve like Jesus served. Jesus said to his disciples, “whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant... For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom.” Mark 10:43,45 When Jesus wanted to show “the full extent of his love,” John 13:1 he washed his disciples feet and then told them “Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.” John 13:14-15
Jesus summarized God’s commandments as “love God with all of your heart, with all of your soul, with all of your mind, and all of your strength,” and “love your neighbor as yourself.” Mark 12:30-31 We call them the Great Commandments. Since God is love, and we are created in God’s image, our ultimate goal is to love as God loves. There are many ways of expressing our love. When we know God through Jesus Christ, he gives us his Spirit to live within us to help us to bear fruit of this kind of love. Galatians 5:22-23
Live For Jesus! [L4J] serves children birth through grade 5 with may opportunities to KNOW, LOVE and SERVE. Families are encouraged to worship together (adults & children) on Sunday morning to experience the love of God through our multi-generational congregation.
The first step on our path of discipleship at L4J is our nursery for children ages 0-2. It’s never too soon to teach children about God. Our nursery is stocked with Bible story books, and caregivers who are trained and love working with young children.
Each of these groups use basic Bible Stories, found in the Read and Share Bible Curriculum. They are divided by abilities, more than age.
The final step on the L4J path of discipleship is for Elementary age students. During the school year, children join the opening of worship and then students meet for a time of worship and return to their classrooms for group lessons.
The youth at Vergennes Church join with the RAYA youth group meeting at Lowell United Methodist Church. Youth groups are packed with fun, grounded in faith, and built on great friendships. New students are always welcome.
In addition, youth participate in a variety of annual events, including mission trips, camps, service projects and other fun activities that that allow students to KNOW, LOVE and SERVE.
For more information and to get connected, please contact us.
A great way to get connected at Vergennes is to join one of our quarterly Starting Point Orientations. These information gatherings will introduce you to our understanding of spiritual growth, which involves our relationship with Jesus, and how we at Vergennes Church want to help partner with you in your journey. See our events calendar for upcoming Starting Point Orientations.
We also have small groups offered three times a year fall (October - December), Winter/Spring (February-April), and Summer (June-August). These cover a variety of topics and interests to help you grow in knowing, loving, and serving Jesus Christ. Contact us for more information.
Since following Jesus includes serving, we encourage our congregants to use their God given skills, talents, and passion to participate in ministries offered within our church and/or community. We partner with Flat River Outreach Ministry, Alpha Family Resource Center, and Feeding America, among other Christian agencies in the Lowell and greater Grand Rapids community to live out our call to serve one another in love. We also recognize that God has given us ministries of serving Jesus and advancing His kingdom in our families and in the workplace.
